Utricularia blanchetii (Terrestrial Bladderwort) Seeds - 60+ Pack

Product Overview

Welcome this hidden predator to your carnivorous collection! Cultivated and collected with care right here at Teesdale Urban Farms in Northern California, this premium package contains 60+ freshly harvested, highly viable seeds of Utricularia blanchetii.

While this charming terrestrial bladderwort looks like an unassuming patch of bright green, grass-like foliage on the surface, it hides a sophisticated, microscopic hunting network beneath the soil. When in bloom, it rewards growers with a spectacular display of delicate, miniature orchid-like flowers in beautiful shades of purple-blue and white. It is the perfect, easy-to-grow addition for terrariums, bright windowsills, or as a living top-cover companion for your larger carnivorous plants!

Meet the Hidden Predator: The Subterranean Orchid

  • The Deceptive Foliage: Native to the damp, sandy soils of Bahia, Brazil, Utricularia blanchetii forms a dense, spreading mat of tiny, thin leaves (stolons) that creep across the surface of the soil.

  • Spectacular Miniature Blooms: What makes this species highly sought after in the hobby is its prolific blooming habit. Once established, it pushes up incredibly delicate, tall flower stalks adorned with beautiful blossoms that rival the elegance of exotic orchids.

The Science of the Trap: The Vacuum Bladder Network

Unlike sundews or pitcher plants that trap prey above ground, Utricularia conducts its hunting completely out of sight using one of the most advanced mechanical structures in the plant kingdom:

  1. The Microscopic Bladders: Growing along the root-like stolons beneath the wet soil are hundreds of tiny, hollow, translucent bladders (traps).

  2. The Vacuum Seal: The plant actively pumps water out of these bladders, creating a state of extreme negative pressure (a vacuum) inside. A tiny, highly flexible trapdoor seals the bladder shut, waiting for a trigger.

  3. The High-Speed Implosion: When microscopic soil pests-like nematodes, protozoa, or water fleas-brush against the trigger hairs on the outside of the door, the seal breaks. In less than a millisecond, water rushes in, sucking the prey inside with extreme force before the door snaps shut again. The trapped prey is then digested by internal enzymes to fuel the plant's stunning floral displays above!

Propagation & Sowing Guide

  • Sowing Method: Carefully sprinkle your microscopic seeds directly onto the wet surface of your permanent pot. Do not cover or bury the seeds! They require direct exposure to high-intensity light to germinate.

  • Light (The Germination Engine): Position the container directly beneath a high-output LED grow light (5000K-6500K) for 14-16 hours daily, or place them on a very sunny, south-facing windowsill.

  • Water & Humidity: Terrestrial bladderworts are swamp plants and love to be completely waterlogged! Keep the pot sitting in 1-2 inches of pure water only (distilled, reverse osmosis, or rainwater) using the tray method at all times. Cover the pot with a clear plastic humidity dome or a sealed bag to maintain near-100% humidity until the tiny grass-like leaves emerge.

  • Substrate: Sow strictly in an unfertilized, nutrient-void media mix of 1:1 pure peat moss and perlite or coarse washed silica sand. Standard commercial potting soils or fertilizers will instantly burn and destroy these specialized seeds.
