Double the dew, double the action! This premium carnivorous plant 2-pack features two of our largest-growing, most distinctive, and highly sought-after Sundew species cultivated right here in Northern California. Perfect for beginners looking for an easy care routine or collectors wanting an instant, high-impact display, this duo brings a spectacular contrast of forms, colors, and textures to your collection.

Meet the Duo:

  • Drosera capensis ($7.99 value): The ultimate beginner-friendly species. This easy-to-care-for sundew grows quite large and produces beautiful, intense red coloring across its tentacles when grown under high levels of light.

  • Drosera filiformis - Green & Red ($7.99 value): Commonly referred to as the Thread Leaf Sundew, this large-growing native species features long, vertically oriented, thread-like leaves that are densely coated in glistening, dewy appendages.

The Science of the Trap: How They Hunt

Beneath their beautiful appearance lies a highly sophisticated, multi-modal hunting system that acts as a natural pest control for small flying insects.

  • The Lure (The Color Contrast): Sundews are high-light plants. Under intense lighting, they activate specific photoreceptors that trigger the production of anthocyanins—the vivid red pigments in their tentacles. Insects are naturally drawn to the glistening red tentacles contrasting against the green leaves.

  • The Rapid Response: The moment a fruit fly or gnat bumps into a dewy appendage, mechanosensitive channels fire rapid electrical spikes (Action Potentials) moving through the plant's vascular tissue at 2–9 mm/s to instantly initiate tentacle bending.

  • The Sustained Feast: Unlike ordinary plants that use Jasmonic Acid to ward off pests, Drosera has brilliantly co-opted this hormone to signal that food has arrived. The plant detects the prey's nitrogen, causing its leaves to curl tightly, switch off dew production, and flood the trap with digestive enzymes to absorb nutrients.

Shared Care & Cultivation Guide

Because both species thrive under identical baseline conditions, maintaining them together is effortless:

  • Light (The Fuel Source): High-light intensity is critical. To maintain peak dew production and trigger their beautiful red and maroon coloration, provide bright full sun or a dedicated 5000K–6500K LED grow light for 12–16 hours a day. Low light will cause them to lose their dew within 48–72 hours.

  • Water: Keep consistently waterlogged using the tray method. Always keep their pots sitting in a shallow saucer filled with pure water (distilled, reverse osmosis, or rainwater only). Never let the media dry out.

  • Substrate: Plant strictly in nutrient-deficient media, such as a 1:1 mix of pure peat moss and perlite or coarse silica sand.
