Drosera Intermedia (Sundew)
A variety of Sundew that is extremely popular, mainly due to its’ beautiful maroon coloring upon its leaves, as well as its’ easy nature in terms of cultivation. Drosera Intermedia also features very appealing white flowers. The temperate type of Drosera Intermedia grows naturally in Europe, eastern Canada, as well as the United States. Temperate, referring to the fact that the ones that grow in these locations, go dormant for several months each winter. The tropical version of Drosera Intermedia grows in Central Florida, the West Indies, and South America, and does not go into a winter dormancy.
The leaves of this Sundew are a satisfying, almost completely round shape, attached to skinny long petioles. Drosera Intermedia, like all other Sundews, produces copious amounts of dew at the end of the appendages on their leaves, and is just as capable of catching ample amounts of prey as well. The plant will produce these beautiful, spoon shaped leaves from spring, all the way through summer and partially into fall. Once it begins to enter its dormancy phase, Drosera Intermedia will allow its leaves to die off and eventually dry out. During this period there is some small remnant of life remaining at the base of the plant, but that is all. It will appear as though there are very small stems beginning to uncurl, as if new growth were to emerge, but it will simply remain appearing this way until spring weather comes and new leaves really emerge. To most, the plant will likely appear to be actually dead, but that is certainly not usually the case.
Drosera Intermedia is a very hardy species, it is able to survive a wide variety of temperatures, even temporary periods of freezing weather, as well as temporary periods of weather with temperatures reaching 100 degrees fahrenheit and above.
